These records are of the Tennessee Volunteers units which left Nashville for Vera Cruz in two steamers, the ships Governor Jones and the Tennessee, on October 31, 1847. Following the records of the discharges of the privates in the Mexican War, there are 109 pages devoted to Chambliss's law career, and a brief genealogy of his family.

Born in Bedford County, Virginia, William P. Chambliss moved to Tennessee with his family. At the time of the Mexican War, Chambliss served as a 2nd Lt. in the Tennessee mounted volunteers, 1846-1847. In October 1847 he was appointed a captain in the 3rd Regiment Tennessee Volunteers and served until July 1848.
